If you’re a natural-haired sister, you know the struggle is real on bad hair days. At Black Hair Hub, we believe in always… ALWAYS looking at the upside! So since you’re born beautiful and blessed with a full head of hair, we’ve rounded up the perfect solution for curl definition – shingling. Without any further ado, let’s get to what this shingling method is all about!
The shingling method involves using a leave-in cream or conditioner to separate each and every curl from each other, then defining them well by smoothing them out. This results in well-defined bouncy curls and also cuts out all that frizz.
Let us remind you however that it’s easier for the shingling technique to work on hair that clumps well together. So if you have 4c hair, it may just be a challenge to achieve this but definitely not impossible.
For super defined curls, you’re going to need a hydrating cleanser, moisturizing deep conditioner, a leave-in conditioner, a styling cream or gel with good hold.
As accomplices also keep a spray bottle, a detangling brush with thin bristles and an afro pick handy.
We’ve tried and tested this and can confirm that the whole process of shingling can take about 45 minutes depending on the thickness and density of your hair.
First things first, to make sure that this method works you need to have wet hair – yes, we don’t mean damp or slightly dry but absolutely dripping wet hair!
Cleanse your hair with a gentle moisturizing cleanser such as Just for Me Curl Peace Ultimate Detangling Shampoo Trust us, this product really reduces your tangles by half.
Then separate your hair into four big sections. Now apply a good dollop of leave-in conditioner to your curls using the rake-in method. Distribute the product evenly from root to tip. Oh and please be super generous with the conditioner. Then slowly and gently, use a detangling brush and remove all the knots from your hair that you can’t remove with just your finger.
Next, take some African Pride Moisture Miracle Shea Butter & Flaxseed Oil Curling Cream and apply to each and every strand. The shea butter and flax seed in this product are super hydrating and tame frizz both at once. Now, using your thumb and index finger to smoothen each curl from root to tip, twist the strand of hair around your index finger for maximum definition.
Those with extremely coily hair, can opt to use a strong hold gel.
Finally, allow your hair to air dry. You can even use a diffuser to speed up the entire process. Don’t even think about drying your hair with a towel as this will cause more frizz. Lastly, use an Afro pick to lift up the roots to add volume to your hair. Encourage movement and bounce by giving your hair a good squish. There, you’re done! Get going and be the talk of the town!
