Imagine a world where you would never be able to use shampoo again. Hmm..That was the scariest two seconds ever. Or was it? Would that terrify you or excite you? Or maybe it doesn’t affect you. There is indeed a method of washing hair without shampoo or any product. Just good old H20. Various people with all kinds of hair have tried this cleansing method: Straight, curly, afro…It works for some but some would never try it unless in another life. This method is used by people who are conscious about the chemicals found in shampoo as well as people whose hair becomes really dry when using shampoo.
If you wash your hair frequently, you probably use a lot of shampoo. Shampoo companies usually indicate ‘’use a pea-sized amount and rub it onto wet hair’’ . A pea-sized amount is never really enough is it? Personally I use a lot of shampoo in one wash. Washing hair with water only comes in to lower your cost. This is a money-saving technique because you end up saving money on shampoo. In your face beauty supply store!
When you use water only to cleanse your hair, you get to know more about it. It’s like spending quality time with your hair. You get to bond and click with your hair…Make some jokes and find out its favourite song or zodiac sign. That sort of thing. I jest! But anyway. You get to know if you’re a sulfate or no-sulfate person or whether your hair does well with certain other ingredients in shampoo.
Shampoos can be so drying. Especially if it has sulfates in them. Water-only washing means that there is no shampoo to strip your hair of its natural oils which keep hair moisturized and scalp healthy.
Sometimes travelling requires you to haul tons of hair products in your suitcase for your 3-day trip…Since you packed 10 pairs of shoes and 20 outfits ‘’just in case’’. Therefore, water-only washing saves you some room, albeit little room, but it counts. Especially when you have a 1 litre bottle of shampoo! You’ll be thankful when you missed the weight limit by 1kg.
Shampoos, like other products, contain loads of chemicals. Most of them we can’t pronounce. Water-only washing means you are not exposing your lovely self to chemicals. So that is one less chemical in your body. Cheers to that! And cheers to you for water-only washing.
Then there’s the flip side. Using water only to wash your hair means that sebum and natural hair oils accumulate because there is nothing to remove them. This build-up means that your hair becomes greasy and not too clean.
You can’t use this method to cleanse hair after you’ve just taken down a protective hairstyle such as braids or weave and expect it to work. This method is mostly used when you start with clean hair that ditch the shampoo for consequent washes.
A blogger states
‘’…After experimenting with water only hair washing, this has now become a bit of a norm for me. I can never see myself going back to traditional hair care.’’
Will you be trying a no-shampoo wash? If you do, or if you have, please let us know how it went for you!
