What do we say to shrinkage? Not today! Do you ever wonder how straight-haired people walk the earth without having their hair shrink? Because same! If you have super curly to super coily 4c hair, you know how it feels to have long hair and short hair at the same time…Because shrinkage. Afro hair can shrink up to 70% of it’s natural length! I’m no expert but 70% of anything is a lot. Let’s look at how to deal with shrinkage:
Stretching is the key. You can stretch your hair with and without heat. The heat-free methods are better:
Before washing hair, braid/twist hair to elongate it. A trick is to wash hair when in this state then let the hair dry also in this state. This avoids shrinkage as well as tangling which would occur if you washed your hair when unbraided.
This entails tying many rubber bands starting from the root to the ends. This ensures the hair dries in an elongated state. This may be time-consuming and you need loads of bands for this.
Threading has been done by our African ancestors in yesteryears. A thread is tied from the root to the ends of the air. You see? No shrinkage.
The process of using a blow-dryer to stretch the hair and get rid of shrinkage. Do this if you want a quick fix and require immediate action. Blow drying will reveal the magnificence of your curls. People think you have short hair? Show them your photo after blow-drying. Jaws will be dropping to the floor.
After deep-conditioning your hairstylist will usually put some rollers on you and put you in the dryer. Apart from creating gorgeous curls, this process will prevent shrinkage. Shrinkage where? Thought so!
All you want to do is to enjoy your natural hair without limitations as to look and feel. Which tips do you have that can help prevent shrinkage?
