Lupita N’yong’o sure doesn’t need any introduction! Recent addition to her list of laurels could very well be her show stopper of a look at the MET GALA. We have three words – ‘Stole The Show’ ; truly nailing the theme Camp: Notes on Fashion.
Everything related to the look was on point – the outfit was an avant-garde look by the one and only- Versace. It featured a rainbow coloured angel wing dress with a matching purse. The glittery, bold makeup complimented the ensemble well. What really stood out for us however, was the hair – bold and unique- nothing close to what we’ve ever seen her flaunt before! She carried off a towering afro with five golden hair picks ornamented in her hair do. And whilst the entire look put together was amazing, we’re here to tell you the hidden meaning behind her ensemble.
Celebrity hairstylist Vernon Francois let us in on the build up when he took to Instagram with a picture of Lupita explaining the look, “I drew so many inspirations from our heritage in particular a self portrait by @laurendkelley“Pickin” as well as #MarieAntoinette and considering the portions of #lupitanyongodress and of course the theme. Our goal is to continue to demonstrate the power of our hair texture that it is the most moldable and luxurious hair texture there is”.
So there we have it! A look is inspired by Marie Antoinette, who, may we remind you, made quite an impact on beauty and was quite extravagant herself. The afro picks spoke louder than words, celebrating natural hair and black hair heritage. The structural updo and golden picks paid homage to black art, camp and her African roots. She wore it with pride and absolute elan.
We could think of no one who’d carry off the hairstyle better. Truly, Grace and refinement personified.
