Wanuri Kahiu, is a legendary Kenyan film director and her latest release, ‘Rafiki’ has us captivated. Rafiki, a word that means friendship in Kiswahili is truly a path-breaking movie for Kenya. Kenya has lifted its ban on this teenage LGBT romance movie briefly to be eligible for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. Set in the bustling city of Nairobi, it is a story of two adolescents who fall in love and move towards a path of self-discovery and acceptance from society.
This path-breaking movie had innovative and ground-breaking hairstyles that we couldn’t get enough of. Both the female leads had distinctive hairdos with a personality of its own and damn! They truly did make a BOLD fashion statement.
Sheila Munyiva sported vivacious faux locs throughout the movie. Adding a bit of edge, a part of the locs were worn in an updo and the rest left loose. The cowrie shell was the icing on the cake and the colours of her hair were symbolic of pride and freedom, including all the 6 colours of the pride flag. We bet this look required a hell lotta time and expertise. We’ve tried Darling Hair Extensions Rough Dred 1 for recreating this look and it looked regal as hell!
Samantha Mugatsia wore cornrows followed by yellow braids. It is quite an uncomplicated design done neatly to perfection. We love how dense they look and the yellow adds a pop of colour, symbolising sunshine.
The trio looked absolutely fab at the Cannes Film Festival. Make sure you make some notes for some serious hair inspo! Read on as we decode their chic hairstyles.

Making an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, Wanuri was gleaming with joy while making quite a fashion statement with her Abuja braids perfectly tied in a low bun. Classy, elegant and sophisticated were the vibes we got from this hairstyle.
Samantha Mugatsia kept it simple and effortlessly stylish with a short crop with shaved sides. All you naturalistas can totally take a cue from this gorgeous look. Low maintenance, hassle free and absolute perfection is what we get from this hairstyle. To complete the look, she added some drama with an electric blue eyeliner, matching her stunning outfit.
What is life without drama? Absolutely boring! Much like her look in the movie, Samantha Mugatsia chose to keep it anything but simple. Looking like a true goddess, she sported a perfectly done twisted hair updo. The actress turned the style quotient up a notch by adding cowrie shells, beads and metal wire to her impeccable twists. Craving this look? We sure are. The Darling One Million Hair Extensions is our go-to to get this fab look.
