Vernon Francois is the artistic genius behind Lupita’s phenomenal hair styles. The North England native’s work has graced the covers of major publications such as Vogue,Glamour and Allure Magazine. Here are some of the tips we have gleaned from following the famed hairstylist:
‘’Using the hairdryer in a circular motion on medium heat and maximum pressure. This will really get the movement in the roots and your curls will thank you for it. Using the hairdryer to push to hair forward really helps to keep the volume at the sides and the front. Every couple of minutes then flip your head from side to side front to back and repeat this until you are happy. This technique can be used all week any day anywhere! The only Two Products in my demonstration is my leave-in conditioner and light-weight styling serum’’.
Vernon is one who draws inspiration from the motherland. For instance, he used the Amasunzu hairstyles of Rwanda as inspo for Lupita’s hairstyle for the 2018 Oscar Awards.

He said the following on his Instagram account:
“Step 1: Patience
Step 2: Use a wide tooth comb or your fingers to thoroughly detangle hair.
Step 3: Section hair into 5-6 sections. Apply your shampoo or Co-Wash to the scalp and work it in. “Important to note” The water must always be going in a downward motion when rinsing off. This will help with detangling!
Step 4: Repeat the above for conditioner. Use your fingers of a wide tooth comb to help with detangling if needed. You are now ready to blow dry your hair.”
“This Style is simple and effective and can be worn anytime anywhere. It’s all about your sectioning.
Step 1: Apply moisture spray. Work it in with your fingers to ensure even distribution.
Step 2: Tie the hair up in small sections around the face. Use a comb to section off a 1-inch square of hair at a time. Use a holding wax and your fingers to slick the section, and then use an elastic band to secure the hair. After you’ve wrapped the band around the section a few times, partially pull the hair through, leaving it in a looped formation to create a bun.
Step 3: Repeat step two, from ear to ear, until you’ve sectioned off all of the hair around your face. Leave the back half of your hair untouched for the moment.
Step 4: Apply more moisture spray to the back section. Use your fingers or a comb to work the product into your hair.
Step 5: Blow dry the roots. Set your hair dryer on a mild temperature. Then, blow dry the back section while gently grabbing and pulling your curls with your fingers to elongate and shape your style.
Step 6: Lay your edges. Use a clean toothbrush or small bristle brush and edge control to smooth the hairs around your hairline.’’

“Cutting the hair dry is always best for me, as you get to see the true texture for the strengths and weaknesses and I’m able to apply the best cut for you.’’
‘’The strands of hair make a shape like tightly coiled springs. The outer layer, which is called the cuticle, is quite thin on this hair type, so hair may break easily. Covering hair with a silk cap at night time will keep moisture in the strands where it’s needed, and stop it tangling. Coily hair is very versatile, which I love. Adding a parting in line with the highest point of one eyebrow arch and pinning a section of hair behind one ear can be dramatic.’’
