A new hair styling tool has emerged in the natural hair world. Any guesses? Yup, make way for the hair curling sponge, also called twist or loc sponge and boy! is it taking the curl community by storm! So how exactly does the curl sponge work? Especially for type 3 and 4 hair – it is now possible to get defined coils, twists and even prep dreads with its small texturized cavities that help create defined curls.
Here’s giving you a step by step guide on this miraculous tool!
First things first, wash your hair well to remove any residue from styling products then moisturize with a regular conditioner in the shower. Your hair needs to be damp to use the sponge. Wet hair will only lead to breakage and it is also harder for the curls to form when wet. If hair is extremely wet, blow dry it a bit before getting started.
Brush through the hair to remove any form of definition. Now, apply a leave-in conditioner or a styling cream to moisturize your hair. Use an oil base product such as African Pride Moisture Miracle Shea Butter & Flaxseed Oil Curling Cream, so that it forms a protective coat around the cuticle and thus prevents frizz. Work it well into your hair.
…and let’s get styling! Take the sponge and place the side with the cavities onto the surface of your hair. Press the sponge onto your hair and work section by section by moving the sponge in circular motions, until you have achieved the definition you were longing for. Keep the direction of the movement consistent throughout the head. Clean up your edges with a toothbrush and an edge control cream or spray. We’ve tried African Pride Black Castor Miracle Hold & Cover Edges to finish our edges.
