On my journey through the land of Instagram, I found Suzanne(Thanks Mark Zuckerberg) She is quite the knowledgeable hair guru. She has a bubbly personality, her hair is to die for and her creativity is through the roof. She’s been natural for 7 years…That’s about 44 in dog years. Damn Suzanne. So let’s just say she can school us on a few things. She answered a few fun questions so that you can get to know her. Here they are:
1. What’s the one ingredient you won’t put on your hair and why?
I quit being an ingredient nazi…..though I won’t knowingly put parabens in my hair. Anything else goes. Our hair is so much stronger than we give it credit for. You know how when they excavate early humans from hundreds of years ago, some have their hair and bones are still intact. My hair can handle a bit of mineral oils and sulphates as long as it is not daily. (hahaha)
2.You have amazing, long hair. How long have you been natural?
Thank you very much. It feels like a lifetime but it has been just 7 years with two chops in between.
Gosh, My hair changes so often I can barely keep up. But if I had to really whittle it down I’d say wigs and jumbo flat twists are my go looks for work.
After 7 years, I kinda have my fro figured out. And if a challenge comes up I know how to fix it.
I had relaxed hair for one year and my hair was so thin….I missed my big hair. Social media truly was my biggest influence. Back when I returned to natural, there were only like three natural hair bloggers The Kurly Kichana Girls and Ess Kay. They are the real OGs.
Both. Why choose one when you can have both.
What is the one thing you wish you knew before starting your natural hair journey?
That it would change my life 100%…..and no I am not exaggerating. Returning to natural started me on my self-awareness journey, a healthier lifestyle all around and an amazing circle of naturalista girlfriends.
I do my hair quite often in salons. I feel that today we have quite a number of stylists who are utterly gifted in natural hair. My favorite would be Alice Oracha @Poshy254 who has done my hair ALOT and I have never left disappointed. Dennis wa Gladys is also quite good.
I am also proud of my Naturalista friend Sheila Ndinda who recently launched a Hair Studio tailored to us naturals.
However, one must do their research before choosing a hairstylist for their natural hair. When you finally choose a stylist, go in with a positive attitude and trust that they want to and will do the best by you. Good thoughts always attract good results. With our hair as much as with everything else in our lives.
Thank you so much. I am honored. At home, I am a big fan of Jay Cee, GAHL and Tangotini. Internationally I stalk Curly Proverbs, Green Beauty and Naptural85
It is a tie between wigs and flat twists.
