Oh the joys of the ever-growing South African natural hair scene! We get to admire, be inspired and even get to meet our hair crushes in real life. A couple of weeks back we got our dream made when we met with Nikiwe Dlova. For any Mzansi natural or creative who has no idea who @Nix_indaMix is, well what can we say, you are deeply deprived of inspiration!
Here’s giving you a glimpse at the creative queen’s visual representation. We’re sure you agree that she’s creative goals that cannot be ignored.
Nikiwe hails from Diepkloof, Soweto and is an influencer; the entrepreneur behind the @ownURcrown brand and a graduate from the University of Johannesburg Clothing Management. Being part of the #ColabNowNow residency which was hosted by the British Council in Maputo and then recently cracking the Okay Africa 100 Women’s list of 2019 are just some of her crowning moments to date. To say her bio is impressive is an understatement. And that’s not all, Nix has also collaborated with impressive local and international brands.
Her hairstyles reflect her creative, vibrant, expressive and brave personality. As we look up to Nix for hair flair, she is inspired by Susy Oludele, @Africancreature, the New Yorker who owns the @hairbysusy hair salon, even getting to meet and hang with her during her South Africa visit. Speak of haute hair tales!
If you, just like us, are faithfully stalking Nikiwe Dlova through her Social Media accounts, you’ll notice her penchant for Darling Hair Extensions Yaki Braid fibre, which she finds versatile to work with. The pièce de résistance, we must say, is how she incorporates colourful wools, yarns and beads to her eye-catching designs.
If you find your next hairdo idea here, go for it and be bold. Be cognizant though, that like with all protective hairstyles, they are best done on healthy hair. So if yours feels a tad dry, try a deep moisturising conditioner like the MegaGrowth Deep Conditioner before you begin braiding.
When Nix is not churning out jaw dropping hair works of art, she can be found riding her bike and exploring the cultural melting pot that is Jozi.
