Do’s & Don’ts For Your Deadlocks

Hey dreadlocked beauties! This one’s for you.

Here are some nuggets of wisdom to help you keep your dreadlocks in mint condition:

Do: Get a Good Locktician

A locktician is a doctor of sorts. They help you care for and nurture your locs. They wash, condition, dye and retwist your locs to keep them looking A-Plus! Once you get a good one, don’t let them go because good ones are not in abundance. The locktician will advise you on the best steps to take with your locs and guide you through the process.

Do; Massage Your Scalp & Condition Dreads

Give your scalp the TLC it deserves by nourishing it and stimulating hair growth. Every 3 days, massage an oil into your dear scalp using the tips of your fingers. On top of feeling really good, massaging helps stimulate blood flow which leads to increased hair growth. The African Pride 5 Essential Oils is your best bet by far. It has castor oil,  grapeseed oil, argan oil, coconut oil and olive oil. Name a better combination…We’ll wait! Also ensure to wash your hair and condition using the African Pride Honey & Coconut Oil Shampoo . Locs can sometimes have build-up of products. To remove build-up and detoxify, use the African Pride Moisture Miracle Moroccan Clay & Shea Butter Heat Activated Masque . What I love about this conditioner is that it contains Moroccan clay which detoxifies and removes build-up! Hello clean locs.

Do: Practice A Night Routine

Imagine you’ve washed, conditioned and applied oils but you sleep and wake up with dry locs…I shudder just thinking about it. Just like relaxed hair or natural hair, it would be best if your night time routine involves wearing a satin bonnet to sleep. Why do you ask? It helps protect your hair from drying  after you’ve washed and conditioned. It also helps protect your edges from breaking and drying out.

Do:  Add Extensions For A Change

We’ve written about the South African songstress Lady Zamar whose locs we love! She’s been able to incorporate extensions like braids and weave into her locs. Whenever you need a change, add in some extensions. Have you tried the Afro Naturals range by Darling? Whether ‘’Soft Kinky’’ or ‘’Afro Kinky’’ these versatile braids can be crocheted into a lovely afro or twisted into some stunning jumbo twists. The choice is yours!

Don’t: Retwist Too Often

You know how they say too much of something is poisonous? That applies to retwisting your locs too. Dreadlocks tend to loosen up with time, which means they need to be retwisted to return them to their former glory. Retwisting is great. But don’t do it too often! This tends to weaken the hair, causing it to break. We don’t want that now, do we?

Are you a dreadlocked beauty? Show us your locs using the hashtag #blackhairhub for a chance to be featured!
