At Black Hair Hub we love shedding light on talented stylists around the world. Not just the talent, but the person who possesses the talent, their persona, what drives them…This two time award winning hair stylist has a passion for hair and it is apparent in her work. We caught up with Makanye and asked her a few questions. It went a little something like this:
Makanye is a 24 year old (at the moment) young and vibrant lady who has always taken interest in arts and crafts from a young age but had only discovered in adult life her skill and passion for hair which she explored and created a name for in her city, Nairobi. She has also been a student of the law, another thing she had taken interest in at a young age coupled with being a daughter, a sister and a friend to many. She likes to eat life using a big spoon and overall tries to make the most out of life experiences.
I started doing hair in 2015. At the time I was only doing my hair for experimental purposes and the fact that I couldn’t afford to do some of the styles I wanted propelled me further towards that direction. Soon enough the styles I was doing was catching the attention of friends, family and even strangers on the street. With more requests for me to do this for other people I realized it was a business opportunity, not that I imagined it would go as far as it has done today. I started up an Instagram page and was offering majorly crochet services as a mobile stylist. It took off pretty well for the reasons that I was among the first people offering crochet at the time as the wave had just hit Kenya and the house call option was of much convenience to clients.
After a year I worked at Mikos Beauty Parlor for say a year before partnering with Christine Nteere to run Del Milenio Beauty Parlor, which is my current location.
In Nairobi, capital city of Kenya, more specifically, on valley road, Aden valley Serviced Apartments.
I’m not sure I can pick a particular style cause I’ve always felt like that’s the equivalent of a mother picking a favorite child hahah. But I will say I have a subtle bias towards the natural hairstyles in general, anything involving updos and the likes.
From the time I joined this industry I met many amazing stylists who were like mentors and walked with Christine and I, this includes Dennis wa Gladys, Saul Juma, Johnie Hairarts and Jeff Ndunda. When it comes to admiration and a stylist I would want to be when I grow up (despite the fact that I’m grown already haha) that would be Corrine Muthoni. She’s an exceptional Avant Garde and Bridal stylist, both things that I look forward to doing in my line as a hair stylist and she’s done some amazing collaborations including Marvel. Basically, GOALLLLLSSS!!
I would really, really, REALLY love to work with Yemi Alade from Nigeria. I love how she brings out the natural hairstyles in such a goddess way and she’s pretty consistent with it. Internationally I would LOVE to style Isaa Rae, for the same reasons.
Ummm.. one of my eyes is smaller than the other
