Most of the time, a woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life. True or true? Imagine letting go of all those things that your hair symbolized. Cutting your hair could mean that you want to chop it completely, that is known in the natural hair community as ‘’The Big Chop’’. The beauty is that there are different ways you can wear your short hair; whether bald or kinky or short and straight, variety is the spice of life!
So you’ve finally decided to lose the locs, whether natural or relaxed. But it’s quarantine and you don’t want to go to the hairdresser. We are staying home and safe to flatten the curve, aren’t we?
We asked a professional hairstylist cum barber and this is what she told us about cutting your hair at home:
Getting the right tools means equipping yourself with sharp, professional stylist scissors that will cut the hair without leaving blunt ends. If you’re shaving completely into a TWA (teeny weeny afro) it also means getting a set of clippers, with different heads to cut the hair at different lengths, and to get the desired look. Make sure to also use two mirrors so that you can see what’s going on at the back of your head; One mirror in front of you and one at the back of your head.
Do what Amina says and twist the hair then chop the ends. You can then unravel the twists and cut the hair in an up and down motion if you’re going for tapered, more natural-looking ends. This is the perfect time to read about 5 Habits That Can Lead To The Worst Knots.
Amina says you should wash the hair to remove debris and bits of shaven hair from your scalp. The process is as follows:
Shampoo: We suggest the Mega Growth Stimulating Shampoo, which will leave your hair feeling smooth as ever!
Conditioner: You can then apply the African Pride Leave-In Conditioner which will leave your hair with mega slip and hydration. Even if your hair is short, doesn’t mean it has to be dry.
Styling: Create some tantalizing texture using the African Pride Moisture and Define Curling Cream, which you will apply then finish off by brushing the hair with a boar bristle brush or a curl sponge! We wrote about different types of combs and how to use them
That, or you could do some finger coils if your hair is long enough.
Sleek finish:Edge control is the name of the game. Apply the Mega Growth Edge Control at the temples for an even sleeker finish.
**All these products are available at your local beauty supply store including online sites like Amazon, Jumia, among others. Yay!
