Ask A Black Hair Hub Stylist

Do you have any burning questions about hair? You’re in the right place. We’ve started a segment called “Ask a Black Hair Hub stylist”. We will be posting on our Instagram (@blackhairhub) on a regular basis, asking you to comment with your hair-related questions. A professional Black Hair Hub stylist will then answer your question under your comment. Amazing, right?! In April we had Grace Wakesho, a hairdresser and natural hair specialist at this Kenyan Natural Hair Salon You’ll Want To Visit. Grace is a regular at Black Hair Hub and we love her! Here are some questions you had for us in April:

1. Instagram user @geechinyanga:

Can I turn my hair with chemical into natural without trimming off?

BHH Stylist: I know how frustrating it can get with two textures but in this dear. There are no shortcuts. You can only give it time to grow out or cut the texturised/relaxed bit. If you wish to do so, have a protective style installed that would last for a while. This will save you from the combing and the frustrations that come with transitioning hair. It all requires patience.

2. Instagram user @_l.e.e.s.a_:

What causes hair to have weak ends? And what should I do to get stronger ends?

BHH Stylist: How often do you shampoo your hair? Withholding your washing sessions causes build up (consists of oils and shedding hair cells). Dandruff is more pronounced if the sessions are long overdue. However, your case might be different. I suggest using lighter oils such as tea tree and coconut that are good at retaining moisture and are known to slow down the shedding process. You could also use lemon or vinegar (both in small quantities).  Let it sit for 10 minutes before completely rinsing out and conditioning. You could probably start by doing this once or twice a week. Let us know if there are noticeable changes! TCB Naturals Anti-Dandruff Range Has All The Ingredients That You Should Be Looking For.

3. Instagram user @verah_riley:

What causes hair to have weak ends? And what should I do to get stronger ends?

BHH Stylist: When did you last have them trimmed? It’s recommended that a trim after every four months works wonders in terms of density and volume. Also, Shea butter is a great friend. Try to make it a habit to apply it to your ends whenever you’re braiding or styling it. I hope you’ll love the feel of your hair as I always do.

4. Instagram user xo._adriana_xo:

How do I correctly manage and take care of my 4c hair and what could be the reasons for it not growing well?

BHH Stylist: We overlook this one too many times yet the results with or without our knowledge are dependent on our routines. Pre-pooing us not as necessary if one keeps to a strict moisturising regimen. Make sure to section your hair before a wash. Spray in some detangler/leave in conditioner. This prevents breakage even as you in with your wide tooth comb or your fingers. Sulphate free shampoos come highly recommended since they retain oils produced by the scalp. Satisfied with the wash, follow if with a conditioner that you will lightly massage through then rinse out thoroughly. Undo a section each, applying your leave in and some oil. Run your fingers through each section to ensure every nut is covered. Comb out each section at a time then follow that with more firm plaits. Unravel plaits or style when needed. Keep it moisturised too.

Adriana responded by saying ‘’ @angaza_salon thank you so much I’ve been doing so many things wrong for the longest time!’’

5. Instagram user _s._h._a._p._i._r._u._:

Any recommendations for safe hair highlights?

BHH Stylist: There is no such thing as safe highlights or colour. Both interfere with your pH which basically means that the ability for your hair to retain oil and moisture is compromised hence the dryness and breakage. However, if you still wanna go through with colour, I suggest a temporary dye. Ensure that when done, none of it touches the roots. Also, follow it with a strict protein and a moisture based treatment regimen to improve the health of your hair. PS: I love Henna! A natural product that has the least toxins.  Tried it once on a client right after highlights and the shade was 🔥. I hope this helps.

Make sure to follow @blackhairhub. We’ll be having another session soon!
