Let’s take a moment to honour the real hair pioneer – Christina Jenkins!
In a world full of extensions, weaves, wigs and clip-ons have you ever wondered who started it all?
Let’s introduce Christina Jenkins – the ultimate hair pioneer in the sew-in weave history!
Who is this Powerhouse?
Don’t you just hate it when your wig falls off your head? Back in 1949, there were similar hair struggles. Christina Jenkins recognised this problem and started her journey in the hair industry by coming up with an alternative for wigs – hair weaves. Jenkins introduced the sew-in method of attaching weaves. A secure way of attaching hair without any heat or chemicals – a BIG move in the history of hair!
The technique involves braiding natural hair into cornrows and sewing in the hair extensions into a net. This netting was then attached to the cornrows and voila! You’ve got yourself a hair makeover in a matter of a few hours. We tried weaving hair in this method and swear by Shea Miracle Moisture Intense Leave-In Conditioner for maintaining the lustre and freshness.
How Hair Weaves Have Changed The Hairstyle World
From adding volume to length – hair weaves are literally lifesavers! Christina Jenkins has literally changed the lives of millions of women all over the world for the best.
Craving for long, majestic braids? Weave it, girl! Thirsty for a funky bob? You guessed it right, get weavin’! Today, weaves are available in every colour, texture and length. Take your pick and rule the world.

We LOVE this Christina hair weave technique! The upturned look at the top adds a bit of drama and the low bun is just on point. We’ve tried recreated this classic look with Darling Mink Yaki Hair Weave and it was retro-chic on point! For a rejuvenated look, spritz on some African Pride Olive Miracle Braid Sheen Spray.
We are well aware of the legacy that Christina Jenkins has left us and we can’t help but give a shout out to Ibi Meier-Oruitemeka founder of The Afro Hair and Skin Company who celebrates naturalness in all forms!
