Cicely Tyson is, and has always been, a legend in every sense – recently, announced as the first black woman to receive an Oscar in the honorary award category. Not only is she super versatile when it comes to acting but has been on point in the mane-space as well. Natural hair, cornrows, braids, bobs, pixie cuts – you name it and she’s tried it ALL! Let’s flashback and take a look at 93 years of AWESOME hair-inspo that she’s been giving us all.
Talk about an actress literally risking her acting career for a hairstyle. Yes, we aren’t joking about this! Cecily decided to cut her straightened lob and go completely natural by going in for the big chop just before making her TV debut as she strongly felt that the character she was playing wouldn’t sport relaxed hair. Not only did the director fall in LOVE with her haircut but the look sparked quite a natural hair movement. We’re in absolute awe of her spirit. Aren’t you?
In keeping with the character’s Southern upbringing for Sounder, Cicely decided to go with cornrows. Tyson emphasized in an interview that the hairstyles she chose had nothing to do with making a style statement but more so to do with authenticating the characters she played. May we say, they did indeed make a quite BOLD style statement and marked a place of reckoning in the natural hair history. We are drooling over this look even yet and if you are too, make sure you moisturise, moisturise and yes, moisturise some more with Profectiv Mega Growth Daily Leave-In Strengthener We swear by it before starting out the cornrowing to nourish our hair and keep flyaways at bay.
At a very recent event, Cicely chose to make an edgy fashion statement sporting her hair in an ombré lob. She’s proving to the world that 93 got nothin’ on her! The unbeatable fashion and style icon chose to slay a sleek – not two but THREE toned ombré wig that went from black to grey to snowy white! Damn! Did she just go and give us all the hair-inspo we needed for the rest of the year? Not only did it frame her face but was also well coordinated with her chic outfit.

Still making ‘em BOSS MOVES! She never ceases to amaze us with her vibrant conversation-worthy locks. This hairstyle, without a doubt, yells out to the world that age is just a number. The side bangs beautifully frame her face and the soft curls add bounce and volume to the mane. We’ve taken inspiration from this look and recreated it using Darling Diana for those easy-going curls in a tinge of copper.
