Customer is king. Ever heard that phrase? It rings true even in the hair salon. Hair stylists will take instructions from you and do their best to make you happy. However, the person behind the chair doing your hair, has things they would like to tell you but can’t. I spoke to a few stylists and this is what they have to say:
Coming into the salon with a photo from Pinterest is the logical thing to do. However, you need to come in with an achievable hairstyle. If you have really short hair and somehow expect a perm rod set without adding hair extensions, that is a wee bit unattainable. Same case applies to colour. If your hair is pitch black and you expect the stylist to make it blonde the same day, you could be asking for a tad too much. A good stylist knows that hair needs to be coloured gradually to make it lighter and lighter in subsequent sessions.
Don’t like something? Tell your stylist. Let them know exactly what you want and how you want it. If they are braiding too tightly, stop them. If you don’t want your curls combed out, let them know. This avoids disappointments from your end. Help them help you!
Hair stylists would like you to keep your head still, avoid fidgeting and leaving the dryer every 5 seconds to answer the phone. Keep in mind that they probably have clients coming in after you. Also, keep time when coming for your appointment. Since they can’t tell you this, I will. 🙂
Lastly, different strokes for different folks. Repeat after me. Different strokes for different folks. There is a price range for everyone. One salon may not charge what the other salon does for a blow-out. Also, please pay hairstylists for every service they perform on your hair. Please do not nickel and dime them by trying to get out of paying for your wash & blow dry. Don’t be that person who belittles things by saying ‘’It was just a quick wash and blow dry. How do you want me to pay for that?’’ With money, Karen. With money.
